Look at him though. He wants to kiss her so badly. He’s wanted to kiss her since he started working at Downton five years ago when he gave her pamphlets and wanted to catch a glimpse of her in her new frock. Since he held her hand at the garden party - which, by the way, was the only physical contact he’s ever had with her aside from during this scene when he stops her (and of course helping her in and out of the car…which is his job…)

He put everything on the line when he told her how he felt (two years ago) and he’s been waiting all this time for her to make up her mind about him. He’s willing to wait forever for her - working for an establishment and a country that he hates enough to go to prison for.

In this moment we can see just how badly he wants to kiss her but he’s waiting for her to give him the go ahead. He doesn’t pressure her, he doesn’t force her into it, he’s patient as always. When she walks away, he accepts that. He may be thoroughly disappointed (and why wouldn’t he be?) but he accepts that it something she’s just not ready for. Stopping her from walking away from the conversation so that she will hear him out is one thing, but he would never have forced her to stay against her will.

I’ve seen people on the Downton tag say they’ve started to hate Branson, that he’s manipulating Sybil and he’s the worst character on the show. It’s making me hate the tag to be quite honest and I’m telling you all now that I tend to block without hesitation…maybe that’s harsh, I don’t know. Maybe I’m just sensitive when it comes to Branson hate because he’s my favourite character.

Come at me with your Branson hate, bro. I will fight you on it.
